Kathy Klass
Board Member
Kathy is a Registered Nurse specializing in oncology with extensive experience in direct patient care and education across both hospital and outpatient settings. Her career has also included work in clinical trials research, patient navigation, and cancer program administration. For the past 10 years, she has served women and families at a life-affirming pregnancy resource center in Columbus, Ohio.
Kathy first visited Kapsowar in 2019 with a team from Heritage Christian Church and has since led the church’s ongoing partnership with the hospital through education, fundraising, and coordinating regular service trips. She is passionate about using her skills to serve others—both in Columbus and in Kapsowar. Kathy is married to Mitch and is the proud mother of two grown children.

Elizabeth Koleski
Board Member
Elizabeth holds a bachelor’s degree in Nursing from The Ohio State University and a master’s degree in Development Practice from the University of Arizona. She has served as a Community Health Nurse in a variety of settings, including five years in rural Ecuador and three years in Malawi. Elizabeth first came to Kapsowar, Kenya, in 2021 for a year-long assignment and has since returned each summer with her husband, Jerry. While in Kenya, she developed the Rheumatic Heart Disease screening program and continues to expand her work into other areas of community health.

Stanley Mutwol
Stanley completed his nursing education at Moi University, College of Health Sciences, before joining Kapsowar Mission Hospital, where he was involved in both nursing care and nursing education. He later became a Nurse Tutor, rising to Deputy Principal and eventually College Principal. During this time, he developed a strong interest in health systems and healthcare administration, which led him to pursue a Master of Science in Health System Management (HSM).
Motivated by a desire to strengthen health systems in sub-Saharan Africa, Stanley accepted the role of Hospital CEO at AIC Kapsowar Mission Hospital in 2018, where he continues to serve. He has completed leadership and governance development programs through distinguished institutions and has a vision to transform healthcare delivery in low-resource settings. Stanley is especially passionate about integrating spiritual care into medical ministry. He is married to Rachel, and together they have four children.

Jon Roelofs
Board Member
Jon has built his career as a financial planner, helping clients achieve their goals and build lasting legacies. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Calvin University, an MBA from City University, and the Certified Financial Planner designation from the CFP Board.
Jon and his wife, Sheri, first encountered Kapsowar Mission Hospital in a memorable way during a trip to Kenya in 2024. While visiting on safari, Jon required an unplanned minor medical procedure, which his niece, Dr. Kim, arranged at the hospital. Experiencing firsthand the process of admission, surgery, and recovery gave Jon a deep appreciation for the comprehensive and compassionate care the hospital provides. Though they had supported the hospital before, this visit sparked a deeper passion for its mission and work.
Married to Sheri for nearly 40 years, Jon is the proud father of three married children and grandfather to three grandchildren.

Dr. Allan Sawyer
Board Member
Allan is an OB/GYN with a long-term commitment to short-term medical missions. Each year, he spends about 18 weeks serving with Samaritan’s Purse (World Medical Mission) at mission hospitals in Papua New Guinea, Kenya, Togo, Cameroon, and Zambia, and also serves with Operation Heal Our Patriots in Port Alsworth, Alaska.
Semi-retired after 24 years in private practice, Allan continues to serve globally through medicine and ministry. He is a member of the Samaritan’s Purse Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) and a chaplain with the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team (RRT). In addition to his medical degree, he holds a Master of Arts in Theological Studies and is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Ministry. Allan has been married to his wife, Teresa, for nearly four decades, and together they have four children, two of whom were adopted from China.

Dr. Gerhard Schumacher
Chief Medical Officer at Kapsowar Mission Hospital
Dr. Schumacher trained in medicine at the University of British Columbia and completed a Family Medicine residency at the University of Calgary. He practiced as a full-service family physician in Kamloops, BC, with work in obstetrics, palliative care, and aviation medicine, and spent eight years as a site leader and associate professor with UBC. Gerhard and his wife Janie, an anatomy/physiology instructor, have long been active in international mission medicine in countries including Honduras, India, Papua New Guinea, Cameroon, and Kenya. He first served at Kapsowar Mission Hospital in 2000, returning several times before becoming part-time medical director in 2015. For the past eight years, he has helped strengthen care and infrastructure as part of the hospital’s administrative team. Gerhard and Janie have two children and three grandchildren.

Regan Strutner
Director of Friends of Kapsowar
Regan serves as the Director of Friends of Kapsowar, leading efforts to connect generous supporters with the real healthcare needs of Kapsowar Mission Hospital. She attended Columbia International University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Intercultural Studies. Regan lives in Kapsowar, Kenya with her husband, Jack, a Med/Peds physician at the hospital, and their three young children. Drawing from nearly a decade of running her own film business, she channels her passion for storytelling and visual media to highlight the hospital’s impact and invite others to be part of its mission.
