Joseph’s Story: A Burden Lifted

One thing we run into fairly often is patients who can’t enroll in Kenya’s national health insurance program because they don’t have the documents needed to register. Without coverage, they become cash payers.

Usually, these are the very people who can least afford to pay out of pocket.

Joseph was one of them.

He’s 74 years old and lives with his wife in a small rental home. To get by, he digs and weeds in other people’s gardens when work is available, earning roughly $1.50 a day.

Originally from Uganda, Joseph moved to Kenya as a teenager and never obtained the identification documents needed to enroll in insurance. When he was admitted to Kapsowar Hospital struggling to breathe and unable to pass urine, he received the care he needed—but was left with a hospital bill of $860.

For Joseph and his wife, that kind of money simply doesn’t exist.

After looking into the family’s circumstances, our social work team confirmed what was already clear: they had no way to pay the bill.

Through our patient assistance fund in partnership with African Mission Healthcare, donors stepped in to cover the cost of Joseph’s care, allowing him to return home without a debt that would have followed his family for years.

Joseph’s story is a reminder that healing doesn’t end when a patient is medically ready to go home. Sometimes, it also means lifting a burden they could never carry on their own—and that’s exactly what your generosity makes possible.
