Where Every Patient Story Begins
Before a surgery. Before a diagnosis. Before an admission. Nearly every patient story begins in Kapsowar’s Outpatient Department—and after decades of wear, a transformation is finally underway.
Change is Happening
Patient monitors. A hospital server. New gowns and linens. They may not be the projects that grab headlines, but they quietly shape the care patients receive every day. Take a look inside three recently completed projects that are helping Kapsowar care for its community more safely, reliably, and with greater dignity.
A Cry From the Box
When Winny gave birth to her premature son at a small rural clinic, she was told he was too small to survive and sent home with him in a box. But one cry on the journey home changed everything. Read the remarkable story of how access to skilled newborn care at Kapsowar gave this tiny 2.2-pound baby a chance to live.
When the Specialist Isn’t Down the Hall
In many parts of the world, patients with heart disease can simply be referred to a cardiologist. At Kapsowar, where specialists are rarely available, our doctors must care for everything from premature newborns to complex cardiac patients. That’s why the partnership of visiting cardiologists like Dr. Ron Johannsen and his team is so valuable—not only caring for patients, but equipping our doctors with skills and support that continue strengthening care long after they leave.
From Hiding Her Face to Smiling Again
Four years ago, Judith began noticing a small swelling in her jaw — something easy to dismiss. Without access to specialized care in eastern Congo, the tumor grew unchecked until it reached the size of a softball, leaving her to cover her face in public and wonder if she would spend the rest of her life in hiding. Then she heard about doctors at Kapsowar Mission Hospital who could help.
Small Resources. Huge Recovery.
Late one night, a mother arrived carrying her one-year-old twin boys—each weighing just eight pounds and critically ill from severe malnutrition and infection. Within days, both slipped into septic shock, and there were moments we feared they wouldn’t survive. But because Friends of Kapsowar donors had already helped us stock therapeutic nutrition, the life-saving treatment they needed was ready.
How a Simple Leg Injury Nearly Took Ryan’s Leg
What began as a simple leg injury quickly turned serious.
As pressure built beneath the surface, Ryan’s leg—and his future—were suddenly at risk. What seemed small became urgent, requiring immediate care to prevent permanent damage.
But Ryan was not alone. At Kapsowar, a team stepped in with skill and urgency—turning what could have been a devastating loss into a story of healing and hope.
When Healing Looks Different Than We Hoped
Even with expert care and timely referrals, not every outcome is what we pray for — some surgeries come too late in a race against time. Little Leon, born at just 27 weeks, ultimately lost his vision despite everyone’s best efforts, yet his story is also one of resilience, love, and community support. In Kapsowar, we walk beside families not only through the hospital doors but into life beyond them, celebrating every life and every mother who carries hope with her.
Protecting the Vision of Our Smallest Patients
In our newborn unit, we care for tiny premature babies whose fight for life doesn’t end at breathing — some are also at risk of losing their sight due to retinopathy of prematurity. Because of early screening, timely treatment, and the generosity of donors, the vision of our youngest patients can be protected.
Isaac’s Story
When Isaac first arrived at the hospital at just 19 years old, his body and spirit had been broken by a severe accident and prolonged neglect. Paralyzed from the waist down and struggling with deep wounds, he had little hope left. But through compassionate care, diligent wound therapy, and the steady presence of nurses, chaplains, and friends, Isaac’s healing began. As his body mended, something even more profound took shape — a renewed sense of worth, faith, and purpose.
Healing Wounds and Saving Limbs in Kapsowar
It often starts small—a blister, a burn, a cut. But without proper care, these injuries can turn into chronic wounds that last a lifetime. Dr. Celeste has seen patients carrying wounds for decades—some so severe they might have required amputation elsewhere. Using creativity, compassion, and innovative wound vac therapy, she’s helping patients not just heal, but regain mobility, independence, and hope.
Janet’s Story
When Janet first came to the hospital, she was carrying both new life and deep fear. After experiencing a stillbirth at another hospital, she arrived early in her next pregnancy, hoping for a different outcome — and praying history wouldn’t repeat itself. What our team discovered during that first prenatal visit changed everything. With early testing, consistent care, and faithful follow-up, Janet’s story began to shift from one of loss to one of hope.

From the Field: Mary’s Reflections
During her visit, Mary, a visiting pediatric intensive care nurse, stepped into both the heartbreak and the hope of providing care in a rural, resource-limited setting — walking closely with patients, families, and staff through moments of deep loss and unexpected joy. As she reflected on her time in Kapsowar, she shared how God met her in the challenges, shaped her heart, and reaffirmed the profound value of every life.
All Pull Together: A Harambee in Kapsowar
Crowds gathered, gifts were announced one by one, and hope filled the room. In a true Kenyan harambee, our community rallied behind Kapsowar Mission Hospital—and the results surpassed every expectation.
How a Simple Screening is Saving Lives in Rural Kenya
Something as common as a sore throat can quietly lead to heart failure. But a simple, school-based screening program is changing that story—one child at a time. Since 2022, local volunteers in Kapsowar have scanned over 9,100 young hearts, catching early signs of Rheumatic Heart Disease before it’s too late. Meet the team behind the effort, and discover how a low-cost intervention is saving lives and offering hope across the highlands.
Meet Bravin: Our Tiniest Miracle
Dorcas gave birth on the side of a dirt road in rural Kenya—four babies, all born at just 25 weeks. By the time she reached the hospital, only one remained alive. What followed was an 80-day journey of heartbreak, hope, and the fierce love of a mother determined to see her son survive. This is the story of Bravin—the tiniest baby ever discharged from our newborn unit—and the community that rallied around his life.
