Small Resources. Huge Recovery.

Last month, one-year-old twin boys were carried into our hospital late on a Sunday night.

Together, they weighed what many healthy three-month-olds weigh — just eight pounds each. They couldn’t sit up. They couldn’t hold their heads steady. They lay limp in their mother’s arms.

Both boys were profoundly malnourished. And when rotavirus — a common diarrheal illness — hit their fragile bodies, it became life-threatening.

Within days, each twin spiraled into septic shock, with dangerously high sodium levels, severe dehydration, and blood pressures so low they were nearly unreadable. There were many moments when we weren’t sure they would make it, and our hearts quietly braced as we whispered prayers.

But because Friends of Kapsowar donors ensure we stock therapeutic nutritional supplements for malnourished kids — formulas the government does not reliably supply — we were ready.

We had sourced these life-saving feeds from Nairobi earlier this year, one of our first purchases as an organization. In fact, our nutritionist recently shared that other hospitals in our county are now sending their sickest malnourished children to Kapsowar because we are the only facility in the region consistently stocked with these therapeutic foods.

For nearly two weeks, it was a careful, constant battle — balancing fluids, correcting electrolytes, treating infections, and feeding them small, measured amounts of specialized milk designed specifically for severely malnourished children.

Slowly, their bodies began to respond.

Alice, our nutritionist, carefully guided their mother in how to feed the twins and monitored the supplements they needed to begin gaining weight.

Without this therapeutic formula and rehydration solution, these twins would not have survived.

It’s that simple.

Relatively small resources — the right milk and supplements at the right time — changed everything. And because of our donors, those resources were there when these boys needed them most.

It took a whole team — visiting nurses and physicians, and our on-the-ground pediatric staff — providing around-the-clock care to see Dylan and Devian strong enough to go home. Discharge day was a celebration for everyone.

Just two weeks later, the twins were full of giggles and laughter. It was hard to believe these were the same fragile babies who had arrived so critically ill.

Our support doesn’t end at discharge. We visited the twins’ home to better understand their food insecurity and create a sustainable plan for ongoing care. Pictured here is Mary, a visiting Pediatric ICU nurse whose countless hours at the bedside played a critical role in their recovery.

One packet of Plumpy’Nut costs just 81 cents and provides enough calories to nourish a child for an entire day. This year, Friends of Kapsowar is committing to fund a full year of nutritional supplements for the hospital, which is estimated to cost about $10,000 for all the children who will need them.

When you give, you’re helping ensure that when a mother arrives carrying a child who is dangerously malnourished, the treatment they need is already on the shelf—ready.

Your generosity is what turns moments of desperation into stories of recovery.
